The Secret to Super Energy and Explosive Happiness – Revealed!
Friends, if you’ve been reading here for a while, you might know that my goal is to become super human–or as close to being super human as possible. Therefore, this update is possibly one of the most important I’ve written so far, here on Quitting Sugar. If you want to do some good in life and truly help other people, you’re going to want to shout this out from every rooftop, Twitter, Facebook, and social networking feed that you have. On February 26th, Jamie Saal VanEaton (who is wickedly funny and has a must-follow healthy food blog!) told me about a book that had the potential to change my life. So before I go any further, I gotta give a shout-out to mah girl, Jamie….Hey, Jamie! Woot!! The book, which has now made history in my life, represents a turning point in my state of health. But before I reveal this book, let me share a snapshot of my results, as if the title of this article doesn’t say enough.
Are You Not Finding the Energy You Were Promised When You Switched to a Low-Carb Diet?
While I felt some instant benefits from quitting sugar and found it remarkably easy to lose 20+ pounds and can keep it off without effort, my results were, in some ways, not what I expected. Leading up to actually cutting sugar out of my diet, I kept hearing about and reading stories of people who switched to a low-sugar (or no-sugar), low-carb lifestyle and immediately gained some kind of super-human level of energy.
The stories usually went something like this: “After a few days of eating low-carb, I suddenly had amazing energy…so much energy, in fact, that I had to find something to do with it all, so I decided to run around the world….six times!” Well, something like that, anyway. So naturally, I wondered how long it would take me to feel good after quitting sugar.
After I got past the first few days of sugar withdrawals (which included the horrendous lethargy of feeling like a zombie, headaches, random sweats, the inability to focus, and a complete and utter lack of energy), I started to feel good. In fact, I had a couple of days when my energy did actually peak. I was so pumped up that I thought I was finally feeling a bit of the of the “amazing energy” that everybody seemed to be talking about. Then it fizzled out.
I was still feeling many great benefits from quitting sugar and started dropping weight just like heavy things that drop quickly off of other things. But my energy sagged…and stayed there. Everything seemed to be slowly improving, just not my energy. “What’s the deal?” I wondered. In all fairness, I wasn’t getting enough sleep. But even when I adjusted for that and started getting more sleep, it only helped slightly.
Also, I expected to feel a bit of a mood boost along with new-found energy. Not that I was depressed, but just not as happy as I thought I should be since I had no real stress or trouble in my life. Again…what’s the deal?
The Angel Sang
Now, if you experienced (or are still experiencing) something similar, you know how frustrating it is to hear all the incredible stories of energy recovery from so many people in the low-carb community. I suspect there are more people like me out there than anybody even realizes, but I wasn’t hearing from them. But amid my confusion and concern, an angel named Jamie appeared and imparted a message from on high. And suddenly, I found myself hopeful, eager, excited, but also cautious.

In the book, author Julia Ross explains that many of our mood issues are caused from poor regulation of the feel-good chemicals in our bodies. Fix your metabolism and you fix your mood issues and get your body humming along. Ross uses nutritional supplements and specific amino acids that are customized according to your answers in the mood-type questionnaire, in addition to eating the right kind of foods that support a healthy metabolism (which happens to be low-carb/low-sugar…mostly “from the earth” type foods).
As a result of following her supplement plan, you should find yourself moving up the mood scale…in some cases, it might be more like shooting up the scale like a rocket! As if that wasn’t enough, you may also find your body is able to regulate your energy level once again.
The Clouds Parted
On March 19th, I started implementing the comprehensive plan outlined in the book. For the first few days, I was uncertain that I was feeling an effect. I thought my mood was a little up, but wasn’t sure and didn’t want to talk myself into believing I was getting results when I really wasn’t. But each day got a little better. I began to notice that my energy was improving as well. Then, one day, I felt as if a switch had been flipped on. My mood exploded and I felt happier than I have in a very long time. I was practically running around at work, rather than walking. I was working and thinking in fast motion, but not crazy or chaotic, but in a more controlled way. It was as if I suddenly noticed the sun shining after months of gray skies.
Granted, there are some things going on in my life that I’m excited about and this certainly must have also helped, but I feel as though the plan outlined in The Mood Cure definitely opened the door to let the sunshine in and perk up my mood and restored my energy.
So after more than a month, how do I feel now? In a word: Fantastic! My mood has simply exploded. I’m very happy, and I also feel a sense of renewed optimism. And my energy has finally reached the level I expected when I first quit eating sugar. Yet, it’s not unnaturally high where I’m jumping out of my skin. I still get tired in the evenings at bedtime and sleep very well. I typically wake up feeling refreshed unless I don’t get enough sleep for a few days straight, then my energy might be a little lower. But overall, I feel energized, alert and really happy.
The plan I’m following from The Mood Cure has given my mood and energy levels some leverage. Once I began to normalize, there seemed to be a cascade effect that caused a shift in my outlook and feeling state. Eventually, I won’t need the extra supplements that boost my mood (I’m in the process of coming off of them to see if my mood imbalances (which were not far off to begin with, really) are corrected. I’m excited to know that after years of eating too much sugar, my broken metabolism will be fixed and will return to normal functioning.
Though there were other contributing factors in my mood and energy recovery (such as generally good things going on in my life, like planning a great vacation, for example), I know that The Mood Cure program was like getting a foot in the door (a very big foot), that gave me the leverage I needed to start a more direct path to feeling super human. It’s leverage I didn’t know existed but now I’m so excited and passionate about the future and have a sense of eagerness to see what’s coming next.
Having my natural level of optimism return, being in a great mood every day, and having plenty of energy while also feeling like my brain is sharper, has been my dream ever since I quit eating sugar. For some people, especially younger people who haven’t had as many years eating a sugar-rich diet and haven’t yet completely broken their metabolism, they may find their energy levels shooting up right away on this program or they may not need it at all. But my guess is that everybody can benefit from the good mood and greater sense of well-being that most people experience when they try the program in The Mood Cure.
